Missing fortunes and a long lost nephew also throw wrenches into the path to HEA for Reece and Zara but seeing them work through it and still remain together made me smile. It happens in 'real' life and is a question not easily (or often) answered to our satisfaction good for just letting us know that Zara has realized her mother is broken, there is no fixing her and trying to find a way to deal with that knowledge and move forward with her life. I am also glad that the fact her mom did nothing to stop or lessen the abuse was addressed honestly and wasn't sugar coated and solved with a wave of a magic wand. Her abusive dad, what a snake! I'm glad we got enough detail to understand what she went through and the type of insanity this man was festering but not so much that it dragged us down into endless darkness.

Never short on advice or with the threat to do Ham harm should he do wrong by Zara is typical of what BFF's do for one another. Her inner circle of strong women was expected as KA makes sure all her female leads have that support system for when she goes off the deep end or just needs a good laugh. To come out of their own tragedies with love and courage to take a chance on one another was heart warming. Both characters had their hearts broken, dreams shattered, and Zara knew an ugly side of life that no one should know. Who doesn't like a good love story and that's just what this was, a good love story. But first, he must prove to Zara that he's a changed man.

In fact, he wants to do more than that for Zara. So when he hears that Zara's having a rough time, he wants to be the one to help. About himself, and about the life he knows he's meant to live. But Ham's faced his own demons, and he's learned a lot. Ham was always a traveling man, never one to settle down in one town, with one woman, for more time than absolutely necessary. Now, it will take every ounce of will power she possesses to resist all that he offers. As soon as Ham hears about Zara's plight, he's on her doorstep offering her a lifeline.

Three years later, Zara's lost her business, her marriage, and she's barely getting by in a tiny apartment on the wrong side of the tracks. When she found someone who was, Ham walked out of her life. Zara Cinders always knew Ham Reece was the one, but he wasn't interested in settling down.
